A couple of weekends again, John and I visited Hadrian's wall. It is a place we had never been to before. So we dusted down the tent and set off. Apart for trouble with the campsite we had booked at (no space despite ringing before hand) we had a lovely time. It made a change going somewhere completely different. The landscape around there is beautiful and stunning, though it helped that it was good weather. We drove nearly to Carlisle and followed the wall along stopping at places and getting out and having a wander. Every Roman mile there is a fort and every 1/3 Roman mile, a watch tower, so you don't have to walk very far before you see something.
We stopped at Birdoswald fort, a English Heritage place. It was OK, but what made it really special was there were people dressed up, telling stories. There was also demonstrations showing sword fighting, archery and fighting on horse back. In the evening we went to a show in Colbridge, which was part of the Roman frontier. There they was a demonstration of different battles throughout time, a wedding and a viking ship burning. It all was rounded off by a big fireworks display. A super day.
